Xiqu Centre Grand Opening – Press Release
Xiqu Centre is the landmark performing arts centre located at the gateway to the WKCD. Conceived as a cultural sanctuary, blending theatre, art and public space for celebration and contemplation, Xiqu Centre is a joint venture between Revery Architecture Inc. (Revery) (formerly Bing Thom Architects) and Ronald Lu & Partners (Hong Kong) Ltd. and its design includes a 1,000-seat main auditorium that is uniquely suspended at the top of the building (a complex lifting process that took 3 days to complete). The elevated theatre opens up space beneath for a bright and lively atrium and interior courtyard plaza that is open at all four corners for the public to freely come and go to enjoy exhibitions, smaller performances, shops and demonstrations of Xiqu opera – the most traditional form of Chinese theatre. This iconic and sophisticated cultural venue will attract younger audiences to enjoy these colourful theatrical performances and, with its seminar space and multiple rehearsal studios, Xiqu Centre also aims to encourage new artists and performers to become involved in this important part of Chinese heritage.
