Woodridge Neighborhood Library

The Woodridge Neighborhood Library in Washington, DC was conceived as an elegant treasure chest that orients library patrons towards the verdant Langdon Park behind the site.

Woodridge is the first DC library with functioning outdoor spaces: a terrace on the first floor and an accessible green rooftop. The welcoming entrance opens into a central circulation area bathed in natural light and offering views towards the park. The building is orientated to ensure that over 90% of all interior spaces receive natural daylight and have a direct view to the splendid outdoor environment.

The heart of the library centers around a flexible terraced seating area that can support quiet reading, informal interaction, or larger social and community events. The interior is designed with flexibility to support a wide range of activities, from intimate reading areas to grander spaces that can accommodate larger assemblies. Its open and enjoyable community gathering spaces encourage patrons to circulate, wander, and explore the different areas of the building, both inside and out.

The building’s exterior is clad in tall, textured precast concrete panels extending up to the rooftop terrace where patrons can sit and enjoy the lush park views. A portion of the green roof is sown with drought-resistant plants and native vegetation. A glass-enclosed reading lounge on the third floor overlooks the green roof and terrace and a large solar canopy that provides shade during the day is lit up at night, acting as a beacon over the park.
