Museum of Chinese Art and Culture At Robson Square

The client’s vision was to establish the premier museum in North American focusing on Chinese art and culture. By bringing exhibitions of outstanding quality to Canada, they intended to promote understanding of and appreciation for the global importance of Chinese art and culture as part of a shared heritage.

Our design sought to revitalize Robson Square and its surroundings through physical enhancements and creative programming – restoring to prominence what is arguably the most important civic space in downtown Vancouver and one of the most important property assets of the provincial government.

The program included galleries, administration,
storage/preparation, meeting rooms, retail, and restaurants. A stunning new entrance to Robson Square, shared by the Museum and UBC would stand out clearly as the entranceway to Robson Square, providing the street visibility for passers-by that is currently lacking. The atrium to the Museum and UBC would serve as a congregation space for visitors as well as a light tunnel to bring natural illumination to the levels below.
